Oncology is the branch of medicine involved in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancers. Medical oncologists use chemotherapy, new targeted molecules and immunotherapy to treat cancers.  Radiation oncologists use deep X-rays and protons.  Surgical oncologists help diagnose tumours by performing biopsies; they together with radiologists stage the cancers and for a significant number of solid tumours they treat by removing the tumours by operations.

Modern cancer therapy requires the participation of these three primary oncologists, together with radiologists, nuclear physicians and pathologists in a multidisciplinary tumour board discussing the complexity of the cancer in a particular patient. The board most often comes to a consensus on the appropriate therapy often consisting of different modalities, and also the right sequencing of the modalities.

Patients get the benefit of many and different perspectives and the oncologists in these tumour boards will suggest and recommend the right treatment for reason of professional credibility.  Patients with complex problems from this clinic will be presented at properly constituted tumour boards and will have the opportunity to participate in clinical trials with the latest modalities of treatment.
